In the ‘Love Scene’ from ‘Hero and Leander’ the oboe and bassoon introduce the Love Theme. The lovemaking begins softly, but sensually, as the theme expands, it is taken up as a give-and-take dialogue by the various sections of the orchestra, building to an explosion of passion that is interrupted by the Fate Theme, which continues to underpin the scene as the lovers subside in each others’ arms.
