Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev (1856-1915) was a star pupil at the Moscow Conservatory, winning the first time its gold medal in performance and composition. Tanayev was a classicist in a Romantic age. His one opera, ‘Orestiae’, is the only Russian opera based on a classical source.The Overture to ‘Orestiae’ is one of his most successful works.
