This terrific new overture by Douglas Wagner opens with an exhilarating fanfare leading into the bold primary theme stated by the trumpets. After a splash of harmonic color and a delightful interplay of mixed meters, an introspective middle section contrasts the musical fare. A percussion bridge brings back the ‘A’ section which is topped off by a driving, rhythmic coda. A perfect program opener.
