“Mbube Wimoweh” (“the lion sleeps”) is a traditional Zulu-song. The African natives encourage themselves at night besides the bonfire: The longer they sing the more confident they are that the lion really sleeps and will not threaten them. Nobody relly knows how, but the song, called “Wimoweh” came to America and was recorded by the Weavers and Karl Denver, 1961 the American Tokens released a version titled “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” that became a hit all over the world.
