Joaquín Turina (1882-1949) along with Granados, Albéniz and Manuel de Falla, was a defining voice in Spanish music. His music is typically very lyrical and deeply inspired by the rich musical heritage of his native Seville. The ‘Sinfonia Sevillana’ was composed in 1920 and appeared almost simultaneously with another orchestral masterpiece, the ‘Danzas fantásticas’. Both pieces are dedicated to the Spanish poet José Mas. The ‘Sinfonia Sevillana’, is a masterful portrait of Turina’s home city. Its three movements beautifully evoke the Sevillan countryside, displaying the city in a wide range of moods and vibrant colors.
