The name ‘Pathétique’ for the last of Tschaikowsky’s six symphonies was suggested by the composer’s brother the day after its première in 1893. And indeed the ‘Finale’ of this symphony is full of passionate emotion in contrast with the colossal march-scherzo and the shattering powerful development of the first movement.
