Hosts of the “Schloßseefest“ (castle lake festival) are the five bands of the Salem community area: Beuren, Lippertsreute, Mimmenhausen, Neufrach and Weildorf. The festival occurs around the castle’s lake in the Southern Baden town Salem in the first weekend of summer holiday. Each year tens of thousands of visitors from the entire Lake Constance area travel to see Salem’s biggest open-air festival.
In 1980, the Salem municipal administration had the idea to organize a large festival to celebrate a new public bath and leisure area. The beautifully naturalized former gravel pit was named Schloßsee (castle lake) in relation to the nearby Salem Castle (former Salem Monastery). The festival was a great success, which encouraged the five bands of the municipal area to host the first Schloßseefest in 1981.
Starting as a community festival, the Schloßseefest soon became a major event. Two primary reasons for its growing popularity are the special ambience of the area and the appealing program of events.
Since 1999 the festival has its own logo (with sun and waves), a mascot named “Sunny“, and its slogan: “The garden party with a special ambience“. Today, 20 various clubs from the Salem community provide sustenance for the visitors. The three-day festival offers entertainment, events, games, fun, massive fireworks and many live music performances around the castle lake. The initiators of the Schloßseefest are the five Salem community bands.
