Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) began to plan an oratorio on the subject of Elijah as early as 1837, a few months after the great success of his first oratorio St. Paul. The libretto of ‘Elijah’ is most skilfully adapted from the Biblical account and its music is both religious and dramatic. Throughout the work there are abundant examples of Mendelssohn’s wonderful musical invention, in harmony and in scoring.
