The stunning ‘XXVI Variazioni sulla Follia di Spagna’ was the last work by Antonio Salieri – a sort of brooding soliloquy but, at the same time, something of a massive study in timbre and instrumentation, much as Ravel’s Bolero was to be in the 20th century. The theme had already been used by a great many composers (D’Anglebert, Corelli, Daquin, etc.) and was later to arouse the interest of Liszt and Rachmaninov.
