Willi März composed this piece in 2007 entitled “Weiwei’s Tune“ for the uncommon instrumentation of zither and Yangchin (a Chinese dulcimer). He wrote it for concerts he gave in Japan with Weiwei Zhang, a well-known Yangchin player from Shanghai. The piece was very successful and März decided to rearrange it for concert band. So, he created a musical journey along the Yangtze River. The listeners pass beautiful landscapes, impressive palaces and follow the river through a mysterious land. For the main theme the composer uses the pentatonic scale. Sounds are reminiscent of the ornaments on Chinese buildings. The lively melody is accompanied by drums and bells, very important in the music of “The Middle Kingdom“. In the broadest sense you can see YANGTZE RIVER as film score without film. It is up to the listeners – and also to the musicians – to imagine the scenes in this drama.
