The first movement of Dvorak’s Symphony no.8, ‘Allegro con brio’, contains no less than five themes that flow freely into each other but have their own character. Gustav Mahler described this movement as a ‘Symphony of Songs’, because of its formal freedom and its almost jovial nature.
